LOVE where you LIVE because Cloughey Heritage & Community MATTERS

Who we are

Keeping Cloughey's heritage alive.

Cloughey Heritage Group is a local heritage organisation dedicated to researching, recording, preserving and sharing the history of Cloughey and the surrounding area.

Our heritage is found not only in historic buildings and landmarks, but in photographs, family stories, maritime history, local traditions and the memories of the people who have called this area home.

Why CHG was formed

Saving a building — and giving it back to the community.

Cloughey Heritage Group was formed on 31 October 2019, with initial assistance from Cloughey & District Community Association, after concern about the future of the Old Meeting House. CHG then developed as its own heritage organisation.

From the outset, the aim was wider than preserving bricks and mortar: protect an important part of Cloughey's heritage and find a useful community future for it. That purpose now sits alongside research, events, archive work and the preservation of local stories and photographs.

How it began

A community idea before it became a project.

CHG's early public material shows that heritage, community use and local involvement were part of the idea from the beginning.

The first public call

The first Facebook post invited ideas around history, community, activities, arts, crafts, games and learning.

9 Sep 2019

Save the building

An early notice asked people to support saving the Old Meeting House for community and heritage use and invited everyone to a public meeting.

31 Oct 2019

CHG is formed

The public meeting asked local people what they wanted the building to become. A later CHG update reported that 165 people wanted it kept as a village landmark.

2020–21

From idea to action

CHG began practical repairs, historical research and consultation on heritage, learning, youth, creative and social uses.

Our purpose

Research. Preserve. Share. Bring people together.

01

Research

We explore historical records, photographs, archives and first-hand accounts to build a fuller picture of our local history.

02

Preserve

We work to protect photographs, documents, memories and places so that important parts of Cloughey's story are not lost.

03

Share

We bring local heritage to the wider community through talks, displays, social media and heritage projects.

04

Community & Fundraising

We organise talks, social activities, community events and fundraising events that bring people together and help raise the money needed to support our heritage work and larger projects.

A major project

The Old Meeting House

The Old Meeting House, whose foundation stone was laid in 1842 and which opened for worship in 1843, is at the heart of the Group's long-term plans. Our aim is to secure the future of this important local building and create a lasting home where Cloughey's heritage can be researched, preserved and shared with the community.

Heritage at the heart of the community

Our work is about people as much as places.

CHG’s events and fundraising activities help bring people together, encourage participation and raise essential funds for our heritage work and the Old Meeting House project. From heritage talks and displays to community and social events, the support of local people helps make what we do possible.

Whether it is a photograph tucked away in a family album, a story handed down through generations or new research into one of the area's historic sites, every contribution can help us understand and preserve Cloughey's past.
